It is truly unfortunate how polarized our world has become and how those with differing views find it difficult to communicate with each other, let alone meet halfway or come to common understandings. This polarization often results in gridlocks where neither party can move forward. When did it become so difficult to compromise, or to understand another’s point of view in a respectful manner? The “all or nothing” way of thinking, and the tendency to make others wrong for their views, does not advance peace or our ability to get along in society. At the AUW Laboratory School, we believe that respect must be the foundation of all dialogue, no matter what perspectives are being shared. Of course, we do not tolerate views that are harmful or damaging to others. However, we do encourage our students to speak up, share their views, and engage thoughtfully with others who hold different opinions.
We also intentionally encourage students to engage with peers who may be different from them and who bring diverse life experiences to the classroom. This rich tapestry of perspectives and backgrounds enriches our entire learning community. In our school, there is no place for racism, classism, or any form of exclusion based on ethnicity, race, religion, or socio-economic status. Our goal is to provide the best education possible to each and every girl attending our school, and there is no better education than the opportunity to dialogue with peers and teachers from different walks of life. In a globalized world, our students may one day be working for a company based in China, Italy, Nigeria, or anywhere else on the globe. Their ability to engage with, collaborate with, and learn from people from other cultures is not only a necessary skill, but also a lifelong gift.
Diversity, when embraced with openness and respect, makes us stronger, more empathetic, and more culturally aware. We want our students to take full advantage of the opportunity to learn from one another’s unique stories and perspectives. Building these habits of empathy and curiosity will prepare them to thrive as global citizens who can build bridges rather than barriers. Racism, prejudice, and exclusion have no place in the world we are preparing our students to enter. Instead, we hope they will carry forward the values of compassion, inclusivity, and collaboration that they experience every day at the AUW Laboratory School, helping to create a future where differences are not feared but celebrated as a source of collective strength.
